The peaceful mountain escape of Greer, Arizona has been turned into a blazing nightmare. A monstrous wildfire, fueled by 60mph wind gusts and bone-dry conditions, erupted without mercy Monday and has already torched more than 2,500 acres.
Locals describe it as “a wall of flames” racing toward them with no warning. One woman sobbed as she recalled grabbing her baby and sprinting from her home as smoke poured through the windows.
“It was like hell was coming over the ridge,” she told reporters through tears. The inferno began near County Road N1072 and exploded across the forest, devouring everything in its path.
According to officials with the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management, multiple structures have been destroyed, and entire communities—including Greer, South Fork, and Northwoods—are under mandatory evacuation.
That means one thing: Get out. NOW. “I didn’t even have time to pack. I just ran,” said another resident as she arrived at the shelter with her dog, still shaking.
The evacuation zone looks like something from a war movie—sirens wailing, skies choked with smoke, and panicked families loading up what little they can.
Round Valley High School Dome in Eagar has become a makeshift refuge, while others are sleeping in cars or hauling RVs to Springerville’s rodeo grounds. It’s chaos. It’s heartbreak. It’s real.
And if you think the power’s still on—think again. The Navopache Electric Cooperative shut off electricity to the area to prevent more fire risks, plunging homes into darkness just as residents scrambled to flee. State Route 260 is CLOSED. State Route 373 is BLOCKED. Greer is literally cut off.
As first reported by AZFamily, high winds are grounding air tankers and helicopters, leaving firefighters to battle the blaze on the ground—where conditions are brutal.
“This is some of the worst fire weather we’ve seen since the Wallow Fire,” said one exhausted fire chief, referencing the 2011 mega-blaze that torched 500,000 acres in the same region.
