Hold onto your hats—because Newark just exploded into chaos. Ras Baraka, the fiery and outspoken Mayor of Newark, was arrested like a common criminal outside a controversial ICE detention facility Thursday afternoon—and yes, there’s video.
Baraka, who’s currently running for Governor of New Jersey, marched down to the Delaney Hall Detention Center in Newark like a man on a mission. But this wasn’t just a casual visit—he was there to confront the system. Cameras caught him attempting to enter the facility, shoulder to shoulder with Democratic Congressmembers Bonnie Watson Coleman, Rob Menendez, and LaMonica McIver.
Tensions skyrocketed. Homeland Security agents warned him to back off. He didn’t. The mayor stood his ground. Moments later, in a jaw-dropping turn, federal agents grabbed Baraka and hauled him away in handcuffs.
That’s right—the sitting mayor of Newark, a man who’s spent his career fighting for justice, was tossed into the back of a government vehicle while protesters screamed in disbelief.
It didn’t stop there.
Congresswoman McIver later told reporters that she and others were “assaulted” by agents while trying to protect Baraka. There was pushing, shouting, and an all-out frenzy as protesters clashed with law enforcement. One witness described it as “like watching civil rights history unfold in real time.”
Baraka wasn’t even trying to cause chaos—he wanted transparency. The facility in question, run by private prison giant GEO Group, was recently reopened under a secretive $1 billion deal. This comes despite a New Jersey law banning private immigration detention centers. The state is furious. Protesters are livid. Social media? In full meltdown mode.
Governor Phil Murphy issued a blistering statement, slamming the arrest as “an outrageous abuse of power” and demanding Baraka’s immediate release. Even the state’s Attorney General called the incident “deeply troubling.”
Baraka’s campaign confirmed he’s still in federal custody, and as of now, no charges have officially been filed. But the damage has already been done—and the message is loud and clear: something is seriously wrong inside those walls.
This isn’t just a local issue. It’s a national scandal. A sitting mayor. Arrested. On American soil. For trying to shine a light on what’s happening in a secretive facility tied to federal immigration enforcement.
