Published in JAMA Psychiatry, a notable study analyzed data from approximately 228,000 individuals in Sweden diagnosed with alcohol use disorder. The findings indicated that participants receiving GLP-1 receptor agonist medications like semaglutide had a significantly lower chance of hospitalization due to alcohol-related complications.
While the research is promising, the precise reasons behind this phenomenon remain partially understood. Experts suggest that semaglutide influences the brain’s reward systems, synonymous with mechanisms driving both eating and drug use. Tyler J. Varisco, a pharmacologist, notes that users of Ozempic often report diminished cravings for alcohol and other substances. Nonetheless, it is vital to acknowledge that while semaglutide users exhibited a lower risk of hospitalization, the chance of being hospitalized for alcohol-related reasons was still 64 percent.
