Well, it was only a matter of time. After getting hit with a $454 million civil fraud judgment in New York, former President Donald Trump is coming out swinging—again. This time, he wants New York Attorney General Letitia James to face criminal charges herself.
Trump’s legal team just filed a criminal referral with the Justice Department, accusing James of—wait for it—mortgage fraud. Yep, the same kind of thing they say she went after him for.
Here’s the gist: they claim James got a mortgage on a Virginia home in 2023 for her niece and listed it as her “primary residence,” possibly to get a better interest rate. They also say she might’ve fudged the numbers on a Brooklyn property to get some kind of tax break. Trump’s folks are calling that fraud.
But here’s the thing—there’s no solid evidence that James actually lied or committed a crime. And some legal experts are saying this kind of stuff happens all the time with real estate paperwork. Mistakes, gray areas… not necessarily criminal.
Still, Trump’s allies are pushing hard. The referral was sent to Attorney General Merrick Garland, but they’re also nudging Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche and former Florida AG Pam Bondi—who’s been tight with Trump for years—to take the lead.
This is the first time Trump has officially tried to get one of his prosecutors thrown in jail. That alone makes it a big deal. But it also raises eyebrows—is this about justice or just good old-fashioned revenge?
Letitia James isn’t backing down, though. Her office hasn’t said much, but she’s made it pretty clear in the past that she thinks Trump’s legal counterattacks are all about distraction. And honestly? That wouldn’t be a huge surprise.
Now, will the DOJ actually move on this? Nobody knows. It’s a long shot. But in Trump world, that’s never stopped anything from becoming front-page news.
So yeah—yet another twist in a legal battle that’s already felt more like a political soap opera than a courtroom drama. And with more lawsuits still pending on both sides, don’t expect this fight to cool down anytime soon.
